Maunakea Weather Center: More than Forecasting Passing Showers

A Maunakea Speaker Series presentation by Ryan Lyman, Maunakea Weather Center

The next scheduled program in the Maunakea Speaker Series will be held Thursday February 22, 2018 at UH Hilo Science & Technology Building (STB) Room # 108. This exciting free lecture is open to the public and starts at 7 pm.

Ryan Lyman will discuss the history and overview of the Maunakea Weather Center as well as the products and services provided.  In addition, he will share his knowledge on the construction of a custom weather forecast for the Maunakea Observatories, with particular emphasis on atmospheric turbulence and ‘Seeing.' 

Ryan Lyman was born and raised in Hilo and has an undergraduate and Masters degree in Meteorology from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa.  He has been the Forecast Meteorologist for the Maunakea Weather Center for over 15 years.

On-campus parking is open and available without charge after 4:00 pm.

The Maunakea Speaker Series is a monthly scholar-focused presentation offered as a partnership among the Office of Maunakea Management, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the University of Hawai'i at Hilo Department of Physics & Astronomy. This collaborative venture gives the community unprecedented access to fascinating research taking place on Maunakea and other topics unique to the Island of Hawai'i. A venue for scholars to share their stories and learn from discussion, the series promotes understanding and collaboration across all sectors of the community, while addressing the goals of the University of Hawai'i at Hilo.
